Flashcards or flash cards? A useful learning tool? 1

flashcards_stackFlashcards or flash cards? I’m never sure… of the word, or whether to use them!

Do they work with kids? Do children need teaching, or do they just learn?

Mum handed me a set of flashcards the other day. She’s a teacher and said my kids might enjoy them. I was sceptical – can two and four year old boys really sit through me holding up bits of card and asking them what’s on them? My two year old wanted to eat them, and was happy not to let go of them, so long as the older one wanted them.

So, we went for a new strategy – you can collect them if you answer right. I laid out a few letters of the Arabic alphabet and the kids had to take turns. To the younger one: Find me ‘jeem – Jamila’. He found it and took it. To the older one: Give me a word that starts with ‘fa’. He said ‘feel (elephant)’ and collected his card. My two year old didn’t last many turns, but my four year old sat through the whole alphabet!

Baby brother did return for the next game though – I spread the cards around the room and the kids had to run around and pick the Arabic letters as I called them out. The kids were racing around and laughing. Maybe flashcards can work.

…I still haven’t worked it out though – flashcards or flash cards?
